STG Presents: Best Coast

Author Seattle Theatre Group   Filed under Music   March 7, 2012

STG presents Best Coast at the Neptune Theatre in Seattle on Tuesday, May 22, 2012.

Combine the sophisticated chill of a New York City winter with the girlish, laid back romance of California in the summertime and what to you get? The answer is Best Coast, the latest musical endeavor by perennially cool, self-described “weird girl” Bethany Cosentino. Best Coast was born when Cosentino decided to come home to LA after a time in New York City, to get a fresh start at living in the place she knows best—California. Quickly garnering praise from critics and listeners with the single “Sun Was High (So Was I),” Cosentino was approached by UK-based label Blackest Rainbow, who released her now sold-out tape Where the Boys Are. Also in the works are two new 7-inch’s, one being released by San Diego-based Art Fag Recordings and the other, the debut release from brand-new Brooklyn label Group Tightener.

Tickets are $18 in advance or $20 day of show.

STG Presents: Little Feat

Author Seattle Theatre Group   Filed under Music   February 6, 2012

STG presents Little Feat at the Neptune Theatre in Seattle on Wednesday, March 21, 2012.

Tickets cost $35 for advance ticketing or $37 at the door. Show will start at 8:00PM.

In his liner notes for Join the Band, Little Feat’s 2008, career-summing CD, Bill Payne described their motivation for recording as a way of locating the band’s influences. When you’ve played together for nearly forty years and have the instrumental chops and ears that Feat does, that’s a lot of influences, so that they can work with friends from Jimmy Buffett to Dave Matthews to Bob Seger to Emmylou Harris to Vince Gill to Chris Robinson and Mike Gordon – and it all makes musical sense.

KEXP, Starbucks, & STG Presents: Little Big Show Featuring Pickwick

Author Seattle Theatre Group   Filed under Music   January 25, 2012

KEXP, STG and Starbucks join our Seattle-loving hearts to bring you Little Big Show, a new concert series created to benefit our city’s arts organizations.

Four times a year, we find a great band or two, give ‘em the stage at The Neptune and donate 100% of ticket sales to a local non-profit.

(Little show, big effect. See?)

Our first show’s beneficiary is Arts Corps, founded on the belief that all young people, not just those with resources, deserve access to quality arts learning opportunities. We wholeheartedly agree.

Pickwick was formed in 2008 when singer Galen Disston left Los Angeles and relocated to Seattle, Washington. Originally an alt-country group, Pickwick spent the following two years trying to establish themselves in the Seattle Folk scene. Amidst a barrage of similarly minded artists, the band struggled to connect with audiences and was on the verge of disintegration. Around that time Disston heard Sam Cooke’s classic, “A Change is Gonna Come.” Floored by the poignancy of Cooke’s voice, the band began experimenting with music that would allow Disston the same kind of vocal freedom. It was not long before the band had completely revamped their sound. Raised on the rhythm sections of indie rock staples such as Spoon & The Walkmen, this new undertaking led the members of the band to dive deep into the catalogs of the Stax and Motown labels. By combining these two seemly different points of reference, Pickwick was able to cultivate a sound that was more organic and unique to the six members that compose the band. As a nod to music from the past as well as their own love of vinyl recordings, Pickwick has begun to release their music through a series of 45’s that are also available via digital download. The band is currently working on writing material for their debut full-length album, expected to be released in 2012.

Tickest cost $15.00 and can be purchased by phone at 1-877-784-4849 or by visiting http://stgpresents.org/artists/?artist=1831#.
