Neumo’s (SEA) & Wonder Ballroom (PDX): The Dandy Warhols’ Xmas shows December 11th-13th, 2009

Rockin' on the Moon

Rockin' on the Moon

The Dandy Warhols have announced a mini-series of Pacific Northwest shows (one in Seattle and two in Portland) starting on the 11th of December. The Dandy’s have billed this as a revival Christmas show, or homage Christmas show to the Italian Christmas.

From http://www.dandywarhols.com:

As Dandy Warhols, we like to take a different approach to Christmas: a little more Old World and a lot more jaunty. Take Italy. Their holiday season is comparable in length to the common American holiday season, but with its baked eel and lumps of coal and mash-ups with what we think of as Halloween traditions – La Befana the Epiphany witch, children in costumes going from door to door for treats – it seems a hell of a lot more festive than a fat man whipping flying deer to bring you an iPhone, doesn’t it? We are on a mission to convince Christendom that Italy does it best. But these things take time; Rome wasn’t bilked in a day. Easing into the task we commence this year with our annual Christmas shows with the introduction of a sliver of sunny Italy to the Northwest’s dreary environs. Just a taste, a Fellini twist on the usual Dandys holiday performance, with shows on December 11th at Nuemos in Seattle and December 12th and 13th at Portland’s Wonder Ballroom.

Regardless of how you dress or act for this show, being Fellini inspired, or Italian Christmas inspired, it will likely be one for the memory banks with the promise of their “Little Drummer Boy” cover, as well as the rest of their catalog of great music.

All tickets go on sale Saturday, November 7th, 2009 at 10 AM PST.

Russian Circles at Neumos 6/09/2008

Author Scissorhands   Filed under Music   June 6, 2008

Russian CirclesThis coming Monday, Russian Circles will be rocking at Neumos.  The instrumental Chicago band just released their second full-length album, Station, and I have not been able to stop listening to it.  It is intense, immediate, and gripping in ways not usual for music without vocals.

Station was recorded here in Seattle at Studio Litho by Matt Bayles and was released by local label, Suicide Squeeze.  It also features These Arms Are Snakes guitarist Brian Cook and Past Lives/ex-Bloodbrothers bass player Morgan Henderson.

Daughters and Young Widows open the show.  It should be good.

Racontuers coming to Seattle – Neumos, Apr 21

Author Kevin LeDoux   Filed under Music   March 18, 2008

raconteurs.jpgFor those of you who kinda want to see the White Stripes and kinda want to see Brendan Benson, I give you The Raconteurs

The newest album, and second release, Consolers Of The Lonely is due out next Tuesday, March 25th, almost a full month before they begin to tour. This is a nice change for the people as this way you’ll actually have the music in your hands when they come through town. This way, instead of being dumbfounded by new songs you’ve never heard, you’ll already have your favorites. This is the complete opposite of how album releases usually work and it has been speculated that this will a) get the music to you ASAP (oh, sure, thanks) and b) prevent the 100’s of 1000’s “leaks” of the album that are inevitable in the weeks and months between when a band begins to promote an album and when it actually becomes available. (more likely).
It seems that they are starting the tour to support their album here in the Pac NW with a show in Vancouver, Mon Apr 20th at the Commodore Ballroom. Following the Seattle show at Neumo’s on Tuesday, they head to the Wonder Balroom in Portland for a show Wed Apr 22.

Tickets for the Neumo’s show go on sale Saturday March 22nd at 10am through Ticketswest.com and 3pm in the Neumos’ box office, now located inside Moe Bar.

Special Note to Scalpers!!
There will be a two ticket limit. Photo ID will be required to match the credit card of purchase. Once tickets are collected you must enter the venue.

Black Lips at Neumo’s: a different kind of review

Author misterlevitan   Filed under NW Show Critic   February 16, 2008

The infamous Black Lips, in support of their rockin’ album, “Good Bad Not Evil”, played a Monday night at Neumo’s in early February. The show went kinda like this:

black lips 2

black lips 3

black lips 4

It’s not that they didn’t play their asses off. We just weren’t into it.
(p.s. someone STILL hasn’t sent me that King Kong track…)

Who is this JITMAN? The John-In-The-Morning-At-Night show

Author Kevin LeDoux   Filed under Music   February 12, 2008

JITMAN.jpgKEXP DJ, icon and all around presence, John Richards stabs another year dead and to celebrate the station has announced this year’s JITMAN lineup (that’s John-in-the-Morning- at-Night for those out of the Seattle hip lingo loop) happening Friday, March 7th at Neumo’s at 8:00.
This event continues the theme of previous JITMAN shows by showcasing the best up-and-coming artists who are getting significant air play on John’s morning show as well as being host to the John Richard’s Birthday Bash.
The lineup does not include any NW bands this time around, but John has instead invited some far away friends, that he has been touting for years, to come fill our hungry heads. At the top of the bill are the Duke Spirit dark, blues-tinged psych-rock from London. Also performing are stylish British indie-rockers The Voom Blooms, (KEXP has a free sample track from their EP-Nine Ships here) and Tulsa, the atmospheric indie-pop band from Boston. (KEXP has a free sample track from their 2007 EP here) Both the later bands are making their virgin pilgrimages to Seattle.

The show will be aired on KEXP’s Nite Life (Fri nights from 9-1) which also means that the station’s Friday Night Gem, Michele Myers will be there to DJ between sets and throughout the night. That is a party in and of itself.

Proceeds will, as always benefit the station and help keep KEXP listener powered. For more info visit the station at KEXP.orgkexp_logo.jpg

Bee Simonds has got the Skillz

Author C-Leb   Filed under Uncategorized   January 7, 2008

In the plethora of male dominated performing artists here in Seattle, there are only a handful of female performers on the scene. And even though by ratio there are far more impressive female musical artists than male, good looks don’t always make up for talent. Lucky for Bee Simonds, she has both.

Her performance at Neumos last Friday night was nothing less than pro. One would think that an opening slot to a full house would create a flinch of nerves or doubt in the rising artist but that’s not the case. Her Linda Perry approach to vocals and aggressively confident guitaring stole the night as she commanded the crowd smoothly from song to song. Even if you had never heard her songs before she instantly made you a believer of her life trials through her soulful vocal delivery. Her backing band was solid to say the least and emanated her already charismatic energy throughout the set.

And after the show, you didn’t find her in the greenroom with all the other bands that played that night, you found her at her merch table chatting it up with the people who like me, were so impressed with her show.

Her next gig is at The Nectar Lounge in Freemont on the 27th of January and if you haven’t heard of Bee Simonds, well neither had I. But if she continues to put on shows like the one last Friday she’s guaranteed to be a name everyone will know soon.
