Author matt   Filed under Music   June 23, 2007

Violent Femmes (listen to Add It Up if you haven’t in a while), the first three Pixies albums, Talking Heads, Jane’s Addiction, DK, early Beastie Boys, Front 242, Love and Rockets, Black Flag, The Clash, some good Bowie, The The, Stray Cats, Concrete Blonde, the Smiths, the best Cure material, DEVO… was there a better decade?

Cafe Venus Mars Bar on Wednesdays

Author matt   Filed under Music, Venues & Record Shops   April 4, 2007

Come out, Wednesdays are great. I’m here now.

JimiC and Alias play mostly 80s & indie vinyl, and it sounds great. The spectrum is from indie 80s to obscure 80s to somewhat modern indie. No 80s bubblegum.

Plus the staff and regulars are wonderful.

Jim’s crates of vinyl are seemingly endless; I’ve requested some rare tracks and he’s delivered every time.

Got a Bomb Dropped on Me

Author matt   Filed under Music   December 4, 2006

I was in Grand Central Bakery near my place yesterday, and when I walked in a bomb dropped on me.

Gap Band IVThe staff was playing a funk CLASSIC, The Gap Band’s You Dropped a Bomb on Me. I almost had to sit down; I was lightheaded with nostalgia, and my feet were getting “happy”.

Back in ‘82 or so I used to hear this at the Skateland roller rink, and one time I went up to the DJ booth to ask what it was. They told me and I went out and bought the tape with allowance or lawn-mowing money.
