Blakes and Cops @ Croc Oct 5th

Author Kevin LeDoux   Filed under Music, Upcoming   September 20, 2007

jesus_is_my_coach.jpgI think I may have discovered the best thing this year. Yes, something even better than a statuette of Jesus teaching kids how to kick ass in the name of the lord. How can it be you ask. Such a statuette would be inspiring as well as elegant.

Well, before you pu-pu my claims, let me explain. 2 local sensations, the Blakes, and the Cops are billed to play TOGETHER at the Crocodile on Friday, October 5th. Yes, my friends, the thing that puts it over the top.. it’s not even a school night. Praise be to little 9lb 5oz baby Jesus!

Hi-YA!

Both of these bands are known for their live performances, and this is slated to be the release party for the Blakes new CD, which-if it even remotely compares to the last one-should be fantastic.

So it looks like you can grab tix at Sonic Boom, or your favorite rip-off online joint for $8 (+ripoff)

Go forth and rock. See ya there.
I’ll be the one with the halo.

Salt & Samovar to Play Sunset Tavern

Author matt   Filed under Upcoming   September 17, 2007

albumcover5.jpgBrooklyn-based rock & roll band Salt & Samovar embarked on their first US tour on September 13 in support of their debut record, Old Joy, New Joy.

S&S very much yank their tunes from the topsoil of Walt Whitman’s dreams, with Moltz’s earthy, elegiac vocals bolstered by his bandmates’ three-part harmony. A caravan of American roots music…
–Buzz Poole, The Village Voice

The band plays foot stomping psyche-garage tunes with intense lead vocals, warm boy-girl harmonies, and some impressive lead guitar shredding.

It sounds good. I might check them out.

Weakerthans and TLTC Play Neumos in October

Author matt   Filed under Upcoming   September 12, 2007

This press release wouldn’t have caught my attention if it didn’t contain the word “Weakerthans”. As it stands, it did contain the word, thus the following communique from headquarters.

The Weakerthans are a) from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and b) damn good.  And if one can predict the future by looking at the trainload of hot Brooklyn acts lately (Matt and Kim, Pela), The Last Town Chorus will be good as well. I’m tempted.

The Last Town Chorus, a Brooklyn collective fronted by lap steel guitarist and magnetic songwriter Megan Hickey, is fresh off of an amazing tour of the West Coast and is preparing to tour the rest of the United States in support of their stellar new release, Wire Waltz.

On the other side of the pond, the British press crowned Wire Waltz “one of the top albums of the year.” Stateside, the album has drawn critical raves from the likes of SPIN, The Washington Post, NY Press, LA Weekly, and others.

In addition, the Last Town Chorus’ haunting cover of Bowie’s “Modern Love” was featured on a pivotal episode of Grey’s Anatomy, is currently bewitching viewers in the promo for the film Diana: Last Days of a Princess, and was selected as one of the “Best Cover Songs of SXSW” by The Boston Globe.

Adding to a phenomenal year, The Last Town Chorus was chosen as one of Borders Books & Music’s primary “Emerging Artists,” joining a select group that includes The Arcade Fire and Amy Winehouse.

The Last Town Chorus will be touring extensively this fall with The Weakerthans.

The Weakerthans follow The Last Town Chorus on Oct. 5 at Neumos in Capitol Hill.

Who’s Going to the BBQ?

Author matt   Filed under Upcoming   August 12, 2007

Cloud Cult and The Blakes are what I’m going for, but I’m sure Blue Scholars, Pela and the Cave Singers will be more than just a bit entertaining as well.

Here’s some pix I shot at the 2004 BBQ, when it was in the KEXP parking lot (read: ghetto, fun, no frills) on a Sunday. Aveo and The Ruby Doe played.

FREE SHOW - These Arms Are Snakes @ Neumos Thurs 8-9-07

Author Kevin LeDoux   Filed under Music, Upcoming, Venues & Record Shops   August 8, 2007

These Arms Are SnakesLocal post-hardcore rockers These Arms are Snakes to team up with The Sound Team and The Clutters to play a free show this Thursday at Neumos. Doors open at 9:00 and did I mention it’s free!?!

TAAS are notorious for their extremely tight style, intertwining riffs and experimental sound. They are formed from late locals Botch and Kill Sadie. Their latest album Easter, was labeled as “meant to hurt you. ” It’s a good hurt I’m sure.

Check out their sound here.

Free Hip Hop at Nectar Monday

Author misterlevitan   Filed under Upcoming   August 2, 2007

A little bird just told me that Portland’s Lifesavas are playing a free show Monday night at Nectar. Their sophomore effort, “Gutterfly”, has benn out a few months now. A concept album revolving around a PG-13 rated urban experience, it is a solid follow-up to their outstanding “Spirit in Stone”.
