The songs range from playful and dancy to mellow and melodic to sometimes just plain raucous. Here are three focus tracks from Loaded for Bear’s debut album ‘A Following Sea.’

Stealing Seattle Away…

Author FancyBandit   Filed under Music, Music Press Release Roundup, Upcoming, Upcoming Shows, music news   January 17, 2010
Saturday January 23rd, the all female creep-pop trio Fancy Bandits from Eugene, Oregon will return to Seattle. With influences like Rasputina, The Eurythmics, Brazilian Girls, and Mazzy Star, Fancy Bandits’ original music has been described as a Tim Burton Circus, a broken down gypsy caravan, and a derelict amusement-pier.  Music reviews of the trio (comprised of bass, drums, and keyboards, with two vocalists) focus on the band’s ethereal harmonies, eerie keyboard-stylings, and the refreshing absence of guitar. They released their debut album, Stealing Away, in Summer 2009.

Fancy Bandits will play at Skylark Cafe, 3803 Delridge Way SW. They take the stage at 9pm sharing the bill with Seattle’s own Nine N Out and Sugarsmacks.

**********************************************************
These women push pop music’s boundaries with vocals that lean heavily on ethereal harmonies, which are accompanied by eerie, klezmer-influenced keyboard stylings. It’s like going to a Gothic circus. And in an unusual, refreshing twist, this band contains NO guitarist...”
- Sara Brickner, Eugene Weekly (Nov 26, 2008)
“…influenced by that Victorian steampunk trio. Dainty parasols and lacy tops complete the visual image, but it’s the haunting melodies that really give color to the picture. And if Rasputina is commonly known as “cello rock,” you might just tag these girls with “keyboard rock.”
- Vanessa Salvia, Eugene Weekly (Aug 20, 2009)
Sounds like….A broken down gypsy circus. Or, as one fan described it:  “Fancy Bandits makes one think of a black and white photograph of a derelict amusement- pier, a circus performed behind a blood red camera lens, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil’s “The Three-penny Opera”, Berlin in the early 1930’s, a special screening of “Rebel Without A Cause” in Hell, unheard music from “Eraserhead”, and the highly succesful soundtrack to some long lost, deeply missed, experimental musical drama.

The Fun Police disc release @ Stonegate Pizza & Rock and Roll Bar in Tacoma

Author et2kah   Filed under Album Review, Music, Northwest Labels, Upcoming Shows   November 10, 2009

Kooky eyes, eh?

Kooky eyes, eh?

The Fun Police celebrate the release of their debut album this Friday the 13th, at Tacoma’s fledgeling (and rockin’ awesome bar) Stonegate Pizza at 54th and South Tacoma Way. Cover is $6, which gets you a copy of the CD (reviewed by Grandma Cat & sample, below).

Quickly cementing themselves as the working mans band in Tacoma, their great blend of folk and rock seeks to make you dance or perhaps just rock back and forth while sampling some beers and enjoying the tunes. Rootsy folk, bluegrass, a slight bit of funk, rock, and some smart comedy and life-experience-thought make this more than an average band – I have caught their great show a few times now (@ Bob’s Java Jive), and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a night out.

Grandma Cat, a local Tacoma rocker, Rock & Roll Historian, and indie music supporter provides a review of the new disc here, or you can click on the “more” link below.

Neumo’s (SEA) & Wonder Ballroom (PDX): The Dandy Warhols’ Xmas shows December 11th-13th, 2009

Author et2kah   Filed under Music, Northwest Labels, Upcoming, Upcoming Shows   November 6, 2009

Rockin' on the Moon

Rockin' on the Moon

The Dandy Warhols have announced a mini-series of Pacific Northwest shows (one in Seattle and two in Portland) starting on the 11th of December. The Dandy’s have billed this as a revival Christmas show, or homage Christmas show to the Italian Christmas.

From http://www.dandywarhols.com:

As Dandy Warhols, we like to take a different approach to Christmas: a little more Old World and a lot more jaunty. Take Italy. Their holiday season is comparable in length to the common American holiday season, but with its baked eel and lumps of coal and mash-ups with what we think of as Halloween traditions – La Befana the Epiphany witch, children in costumes going from door to door for treats – it seems a hell of a lot more festive than a fat man whipping flying deer to bring you an iPhone, doesn’t it? We are on a mission to convince Christendom that Italy does it best. But these things take time; Rome wasn’t bilked in a day. Easing into the task we commence this year with our annual Christmas shows with the introduction of a sliver of sunny Italy to the Northwest’s dreary environs. Just a taste, a Fellini twist on the usual Dandys holiday performance, with shows on December 11th at Nuemos in Seattle and December 12th and 13th at Portland’s Wonder Ballroom.

Regardless of how you dress or act for this show, being Fellini inspired, or Italian Christmas inspired, it will likely be one for the memory banks with the promise of their “Little Drummer Boy” cover, as well as the rest of their catalog of great music.

All tickets go on sale Saturday, November 7th, 2009 at 10 AM PST.

FIVE FOR FIGHTING

CANCELED

singer sick

Five For Fighting, led by John Ondrasik, will perform music from their new album SLICE on November 5, 2009, at the Crocodile. The album is led by the emotionally moving piano-driven first single, “Chances,” which is already a top-20 hit on the Billboard Adult Chart. Known for his song “Superman (It’s Not Easy),” which became an anthem after the September 11 attacks, the Grammy-nominated platinum-selling recording artist’s new album is written with the perspective of one man’s views on his life and the experiences and surrounding world that have shaped it. SLICE harkens back to the golden age of American songwriting in the 1970’s, an era that greatly influenced Ondrasik’s own introspective style.
