STG Presents: Sinead O’Connor

Author Seattle Theatre Group   Filed under Music, Upcoming Shows   April 17, 2012

July 24th, 2012 @7:30

The Moore Theatre

$22.50 – $42.50 (not including fees)

There has never been mistaking Sinéad O’Connor for anybody else. A voice born to break as many hearts as windows, as tender as it is lethal. The face, simultaneously that of ocean-wide-eyed angel and shaven-headed warrior queen. And the spirit, courageous in its conviction, undaunted by controversy and fortified with endless reserves of resilience. Sinéad O’Connor is that rare thing in popular music: a complete one-off. From her first breakthrough hit, 1987’s ‘Mandinka’, to the multi-platinum international success of 1990’s I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got with its unforgettable number one version of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, from her fearless genre-crossing forays into Irish folk and roots reggae to her collaborations with artists as diverse as Peter Gabriel, Massive Attack and The Chieftans, O’Connor has trodden a unique path to become the most iconic Irish female artist of the past 30 years. There is no one like Sinéad O’Connor. There is only Sinéad O’Connor.

The band was formed by good friends who have spent years touring and recording in a variety of musical settings. We love to play music together and have always had a fondness for the music of the 80s. After perusing our LPs for inspiration, the band put together a list of favorite songs and took up the challenge to become the definitive 80s experience. It’s All About The Details

The synth-based dance music of the 80s is a rich tapestry of sound with layered keyboards, electronic percussion, and highly polished production. There are plenty of bar bands out there playing a rough approximation of those 80s hits. As the saying goes, “the devil is in the details”. The challenge in playing such complex and recognizable music is to painstakingly recreate all the subtle nuances and tiny details. It’s hard to do it really well, and we put immense effort into preparing these songs for performance, tweaking synth patches, programming guitar tones and dialing in the electronic percussion. It has to be right. But that’s what makes the difference between getting it “in the ballpark” and nailing it.

Author et2kah   Filed under Music, Music Politics, Upcoming, Upcoming Shows, music news   February 22, 2011

Tacoma Hempfest and Shock Treatment Management are pleased to announce an open call for entertainers for the 2nd Annual Tacoma Hempfest to be held June 25, 2011. Tacoma Hempfest is a Washington State non-profit corporation which stages an annual full day celebration of the extensive utility of cannabis or hemp, and the social cost of hemp prohibition. The first Tacoma Hempfest in 2010 generated a peaceful crowd of 5,000 in Wright Park, Tacoma on the last weekend in June.

Musical performers of all genres are invited to submit Electronic Press Kits or links to social/musician sites with a selection of sample music.

Variety performers will work in a number of areas throughout the festival site including family, artist and holistic medical areas. Variety performers are invited to send an email of interest, brief description of talent and sample of past work, references, website or other appropriate details. We can imagine face painters, magicians, dance troupes, acrobats, stilt walkers, some of whom would work during stage entertainment, some of whom would provide spontaneous in crowd entertainment during breaks.

Above all, Tacoma Hempfest wishes to portray and include the diversity of cannabis culture. This includes not only arts and entertainment, but also food and merchandise vendors, outreach organizations, healing arts, and industry.

Submission may be sent to Cat@ShockTreatmentManagement.com or Kevin@ShockTreatmentManagement.com. Submissions close on March 24, 2011. Entertainment line-up will be announced April 20, 2011.

Vending information may be found at www.TacomaHempfest.com in the near future.

Laguna, Live at Tost

Author lagunaleader   Filed under Music, Northwest Labels, Upcoming Shows, Venues & Record Shops   November 4, 2010

Friday, November 12, 2010, 9pm

Laguna will be performing at Tost, opening up for two great bands, Satellite by Night and Bucket of Honey.

Laguna: The music group Laguna is the creation of songwriter/drummer/programmer Shane Peck and vocalist/lyricist Lydia Nor. The music style combines art-pop, electronica, ambient, reggae/dub, soca and some Jazz elements. The band was officially formed in 1998. The current line-up includes bassist/arranger Noah Wilson, keyboardist Markus von Prause and alto saxophone player/percussionist Brian Hartman. They just released a new recording, “Volcano”.

Bucket of Honey: This Neoacoustifunk HipHop duo is made up of one part Nate Bogopolsky AKA Nate B, one part Annie Jantzer. Beginning his musical career as a singer, Nate B writes most of his tunes with a simple guitar strumming accompaniment, thus spawned the easy to swallow sound and feel of much of Bucket of Honey’s music. He has been involved in the music scene in Seattle for many years playing in groups such as Seattle Opera Company, The Dickens Carolers, The Peeon Yabutts, and Kickshaw. The other half of Bucket of Honey, flute and vocals, is a brain damaged cocky farm girl who get’s bucked off the horse and gets right back on none the wiser. That same gusto and lack of shame led Annie Jantzer to pursue a career in theatre. With a BA in theatre arts, she moved to Seattle and randomly joined forces with Nate. The rest, as they say, is history.

Satellite By Night: Satellite by Night’s musical influences may be as far reaching as the origins of its members; Okinawa, Chile, and the USA. CJ, Gabe, Mas and Mike cite folk, funk, dub, rock, metal, trance, soul, and ambient musical styles as their personal influences, and the band’s self-labeled “folk-fusion groove” sound is cohesive yet diverse.

Album Review: The Gentry – ‘Sex by the Unit’

Author et2kah   Filed under Album Review, Music, Northwest Labels, Upcoming, Upcoming Shows   August 2, 2010

The Gentry

Sex by the Unit, by Portland’s The Gentry, danceable fusion-electro rockers, opens with a 10 note tease of down tempo electro-beats, warns you with a tempered siren, launches into a hard hitting blend of meta-influenced electro rock that grabs your attention and body. The opening title song is fueled by the signature driving guitar, beautifully integrated electro-keyboard work, lugubrious bass and driving rhythm punctuated glorious, hi-hat speed work, the lyrics insightfully snarl and bite at pop culture on a rich, soaring and seductive vocal. It only gets better from here.

The Gentry – Sex by the Unit – Official Video

Awkwardness! Opens with big driving drums, a distorted loose bass line, synth bass followed by guitar then powerful vocal that channels both earlier electro-rock influences as well as power groups like Zeppelin. This is as straightforward rock and roll as any one makes, electro punk to the highest degree, and my favorite new road tune.

The Dandy Warhols Present Logan Lynn + The Gentry ON TOUR

Author et2kah   Filed under Music, Northwest Labels, Upcoming Shows, music news   July 1, 2010

Logan Lynn + The Gentry, The Hugs, and Little Black Bats

Logan Lynn is touring in support of his recently released and critically acclaimed CD, From Pillar to Post, on The Dandy Warhol’s indie Beat The World Records. His three CDs have generated an extraordinary amount of buzz, particularly in the Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego, and New York LGBT communities. Additionally, his videos have been well received on MTV, VH1, and LOGO channels. Comparisons ranging from The Postal Service to M83, Lykke Li to Cut Copy, and even Ladytron, Goldfrapp, and indie rockers Metric, are often applied to Logan’s music.

The Gentry, a separate entity providing Rock & Roll to Logan’s emo-tronic sound, also have a new record recently released entitled ‘Sex by the Unit’, which sports an awesome condom-like package which is well worth the $10 I paid for mine. You even have to tear it like a condom package.

Recent shows in the Pacific Northwest have been raucous parties, featuring lines stretching around the block, and satisfied partied-out party-goers filtering out into the early morning. The Oregon Music News recently profiled Logan’s growing impact on the Portland live music scene.

This past Sunday, June 27, marked the launch of Logan’s West Coast tour, starting in Seattle at The Cuff’s Gay Pride Block Party and playing to an estimated crowd of 6,000.

Dates are below – try and catch one if you can.

Benefit show in Tacoma – Bob’s Java Jive – Keep the Jive Alive! 4/2/2010

Author et2kah   Filed under Music, Upcoming, Upcoming Shows, Venues & Record Shops   March 25, 2010

As Your Are Entertainment presents four of Tacoma’s hottest indie music acts April 2, at 8 PM show to benefit the World Famous Bob’s Java Jive at 2102 South Tacoma Way. The club is both an icon of Tacoma’s past, serving many roles through the years, and a beacon toward the future providing a home for local acts to sharpen their musical skills.

The Fun Police with special guests Big Wheel Stunt Show (recently returned from SXSW), The Brotherhood of the Black Squirrel, and Ten Miles of Bad Road will be on hand to celebrate The World’s Famous Bob’s Java Jive’s history which began in 1927. The Java Jive, as it is affectionately known, was originally built as a roadside café on a Highway 99 during its infancy. The Java Jive is what is commonly referred to as a “Duck” or a building in the shape of an oversize object that promotes the business purpose, or in the Jive’s case, a coffee pot for weary travelers.

During the 1950s, Bob and Lylabelle Radernich purchased the business and building and began operating as a bar and lounge. Through the years, the Java Jive has enjoyed a diverse history. Mystery airline hijacker DB Cooper was rumored to have finished a beer on his way to SeaTac for his fateful flight; The Ventures are said to have played the Jive regularly in advance of their top 40 successes; and two chimps named “Java” and “Jive” were at home in the Jungle Room for years. Mention Bob’s Java Jive to Tacoma residents, and you’ll hear coming of age anecdotes, memories of go-go dancers, the TV Theme duo if they have been there, and well intentioned regrets, if they haven’t.

Don’t miss the opportunity to celebrate and assist the Java Jive and hear four great bands. $3 minimum donation at the door, 21+.

The Harmonica Pocket Gets Loose with Seuss

the harmonica pocket says “Get Loose with Seuss”

Family Concerts Celebrate Words, Music and Play

www.harmonicapocket.com

The Harmonica Pocket (Keeth Monta Apgar and Nala Walla) Celebrates Dr Seuss' birthday with lots of shows.

The Harmonica Pocket celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday in March with a series of family concerts. The Harmonica Pocket invites kids and parents to discover the wit and magic of Theodor Seuss Geisel with their original music set to Dr. Seuss’ books. Audiences are invited to sing the words to Dr. Seuss’s ABCs, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and other selected books. They’ll also present a theatrical history about the creation of some of Seuss’ best-loved stories. Of course, to celebrate what would have been his 106th birthday on March 2nd, everyone can join in singing “Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!”

Keeth Monta Apgar and Nala Walla, are the core duo of The Harmonica Pocket, and will perform at all of these shows. Equipped with a hula hoop, a ukulele, face paint and a suitcase full of simple props and instruments, The Harmonica Pocket family show gently expands the boundaries of family entertainment with swinging, acoustic story-songs, wordplay and acrobatic antics, complete with Nala’s amazing hula hoop artistry.

“Dr. Seuss is the king of creativity and an icon of the power of imagination.  He dreamed up impossible and amusing images (like the Bee-Watcher-Watcher watching the Watcher who’s watching the Bee) and brought them to life with his colorful sketches and meticulous rhymes,” explains Keeth. “He was way ahead of his time.”

The Harmonica Pocket is a Puget Sound based group known for “thoroughly catchy, toe-tapping indie-pop tunes.” Their children’s album LADYBUG ONE  is a collection of original and classic tunes which celebrates the delight of nature. The CD has won national acclaim, including a Parents’ Choice Award and favorable reviews in the Seattle Times, San Jose Mercury News, New York Post, Mothering, Cricket, Time Out New York and Cookie  magazines. This truly “green” recording was produced off the grid at the group’s solar-powered studios on an island in Puget Sound.

The “Get Loose with Seuss” performance schedule includes these dates.
