Jay Reatard Dead at 29

Memphis musician Jimmy Jay Lindsey Jr., better known as Jay Reatard, was found dead in his Midtown home this morning, according to family and friends. He was 29.

Memphis police have opened a death investigation, spokesman Jennifer Robinson said. Lindsey was found around 3:30 a.m. at his home, Robinson said.

“Yeah, it’s true,” said Alicja Trout, a friend and former bandmate. “I don’t know much about it yet, because I haven’t been able to get in touch with the police.”

He played the Block Party a couple years ago. Blood Visions is really good.

Olympia’s Letters make Ground

Author matt   Filed under Listen Now!, music news   March 24, 2009

While Olympia’s Letters works on the studio follow-up to last year’s “In Case we Lose What We Have”, they have been releasing various teasers. Last month they had a song on the latest Ball of Wax compilation (#15), a Seattle quarterly compilation put out by Levi Fuller. The track is called “Grand” and features Seattle’s Kieran Harrison-Buehlinger (Corespondents, Hecka Ar, etc) on the one-stringed Chinese instrument, the don bao. A version of “Grand” will be on the new album.

Grand

Last month they also did a cassette tape-only release of improvised compositions called “Insta”; the album uses a ridiculous array of instruments and covers some serious genre ground. “Ground” is among the ground covered.

The Heart is a Drum Machine

Author matt   Filed under music news   March 5, 2009

“The Heart is a Drum Machine,” the eagerly awaited documentary that explores the complex and critical relationship between humanity and music, will make its Seattle premiere at the Northwest Film Forum on Apr. 22 at 8:00 pm.

The film, directed by Christopher Pomerenke and produced by Ryan Page and Hans Fjellestad of The Twinkle Cash Company and responsible for 2006’s “Moog” documentary, explores music’s role in shaping human history, the profound connection people have had to music throughout human history, how it has shaped our experiences and its involvement in our daily lives. Tackling the topic is a who’s who of musicians including George Clinton, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, X’s John Doe, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante and Sleater-Kinney’s Janet Weiss, music historians and writers such as MTV’s Kurt Loder and KCRW’s Nic Harcourt as well as scientists including Carl Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan (discussing the “Golden Record”).

The Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd created an original score for the film as well as covering Elton John’s “Rocket Man” with vocals from the aforementioned Keenan.

Tickets for the screening are currently on sale for $6 to $9 at the Northwest Film Forum box office or online at www.brownpapertickets.com. The Northwest Film Forum is located at 1515 12th Ave.

2009 Changes for Itunes

Author keli   Filed under Music and the Internet, music news   January 7, 2009

Apple has recently announced that they have reached a deal with the four major labels, EMI, Sony, Universal, and Warner to remove those annoying anti-copying restrictions ( the inconvenient feature that makes it nearly impossible to move purchased tracks between computers and Ipods, and other digital devices) from their songs.

Good news: most songs will now be availble for just $.69 cents!

Bad news: The mighty labels now hold pricing rights to all their songs, which means some tunes will be going up to $1.29
