Southern from the Northwest, Popular in Germany

Author matt   Filed under Listen Now!, Music   October 29, 2010

Puyallup five piece SweetKiss Momma plays full-throated Roots Rock on their latest album Revival Rock, which is getting more attention in Europe than here because of… wait for it… better distribution. Agreements with Just For Kicks Music (German), Barchen Records (German) and Sonic Rendezvous (Dutch) have made SKM possibly more popular in Europe than where their, dare I say it?, roots are. <groan>.

There’s no reason for that. Go out and see them.

Well now, let’s look back a bit, shall we, kids?

There now, don’t we feel better? It’s always nice when the talented musicians from “In Concert ‘91″ come to our little town to play a song.

Bossanova released 20 years ago today

Author matt   Filed under Listen Now!, music news   August 13, 2010

Thanks to John Richards at KEXP we’re reminded Bossanova was released 20 years ago today.

http://www.google.com/search?aq=f&sourc … =bossanova <- you can listen to tracks directly from that Google link, free, from that page. KEXP is playing many songs from Bossanova today.

I bought it 20 years ago today, plus about a week. I had just discovered Doolittle, and was absolutely blinded by this new band.

I saw them on Bossanova tour that December 10th at the Gothic Theater in Denver.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bossanova <- you can listen to “Velouria” on that page, directly. It features a now-rarely used theramin, known for making “ghost” noises in movies and TV shows.

After the Pixies finishing touring obligations for their second album Doolittle (1989) in 1990, band members Black Francis, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering moved from Boston to Los Angeles. Bassist Kim Deal did not initially move with the rest of her band mates due to the amount of tension that existed within the band at the time. Deal ultimately decided to travel out to Los Angeles with the rest of the group.[1] Lovering stated that he, Santiago, and Black Francis moved to Los Angeles because that’s where they intended to record. The three band members lived in the Oakwood apartments, along with comic Garett Morris and members of the band White Lion. Producer Gil Norton also moved into the apartment complex.[2]

Rolling Stone gave Bossanova three out of five stars

This site free to good home

Author matt   Filed under Music and the Internet   July 31, 2010

Free, as in $0. As you can tell, I don’t have time to put into it any longer. If I can’t find a home, I’ll archive it for a few years, then it’ll slip under the waves one night while you sleep.

If there are respondents to this (use the Contact page), I reserve the right to pick who gets it under what will surely seem to you completely arbitrary and unfair criteria, but to me will appear as my best attempt at vetting.

I’ll host it for one year and transfer the domain name.

Combat, from Bits

The former bandmate of members of Death Cab for Cutie (they shared a third band back in the day) has no label, and is assembling a band. We’ll have the latest if/when he’s going to play live, and maybe another track. I love this single.

The Dead Weather – Will There Be Enough Water?

Watch for uncensored Cinemax debut of their short film for latest single, “Treat Me Like Your Mother”.  Directed by Jonathan Glazer, the groundbreaking short will premiere in its entirety on July 11th at 9:55pm on the premium cable channel.

Horehound, TDW’s debut, out July 14th.

Spoon, Why The Store Fuss?

Author matt   Filed under Music and the Internet   June 30, 2009

I think (know) I’m nitpicking here, but dude, do we really need an 11-field form to fill out to buy $2.97 worth of music?

And that’s only step 1 of three.

spoon-checkout

Yea it’s Spoon’s first studio tracks since 1997’s outstanding Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga album. Yes, it’s called Got Nuffin. Yes it’s cheap. But that’s the point: for a $30 purchase I’ll go ahead and create an account, input my billing/shipping info, locate that stupid security code on the back of my credit card, confirm my new account via email blah blah blah. But for less than 3 bucks?

I have a better idea. Use PayPal… they have Buy Now buttons. You see them all over the web. You click it, and unless you’re one of the 10 people in Siberia who has no PayPal account, you’re done. Here’s how. Spoon, please tell your devs to make it easy for us.

Nitpick over. Now maybe I’ll complete this thing and get to listinin’.

The announcement will be made on Shake the Shack at 6pm today. Hooray Leon!

Rainy Dawg Radio Turns 6, Throws Party

Author matt   Filed under Upcoming Shows   April 22, 2009

The University of Washington’s campus radio station Rainy Dawg Radio is celebrating its sixth birthday with a night of pop-infused underground noise. On Friday April 24th at 7pm Crystal Stilts, Wavves, and Idle Times will play a one-night-only show in the North Husky Den located in the HUB on the University of Washington Campus.

Crystal Stilts are an underground garage punk outfit hailing from New York City. Their debut self-titled EP has garnered praise from numerous review sites, including a Best New Music nod from Pitchfork Media. Their unique aesthetic has given them the buzz of being arguably the hottest band coming out of New York City today.
http://www.myspace.com/crystalstilts

Wavves is the relatively new lo-fi noise/punk project of Nathan Williams, a native of the San Diego. Touring with drummer Ryan Ulsh, Wavves delivers pop songs that are drowned in layers of noise and dissonance. A noise which has also warranted the Best New Music recommendation from Pitchfork.
http://www.myspace.com/wavves

Idle Times is the project of Brian Idle, the Seattle native. Brian Idle self-records all his songs, giving them a genuine touch of imperfection. Idle Times has been acquiring a good deal of press and quite a following. You can find Idle Times’ most recent 7″ on the notable record label Woodsist.

AFCGT is the baby of two Seattle underground bands: A-Frames and Climax Golden Twins. “AFCGT still throttle conventional rock niceties with white-knuckled intensity, sending the VU needle vibrating into the red like a stressed-to-the-max forehead vein” (Dave Segal, The Stranger).

Tickets are $6 will a valid UW student ID available in the HUB ticket Office. General Admission tickets are available via Tickets West for $10.
