Motown Tribute @ Conor Byrne Pub w/ Ancient Vessel Allstars, Head & the Heart, and more

Author K.C.P.   Filed under Music   August 19, 2010

Ancient Vessel is involved in a show at Conor Byrne this Saturday for a Motown Tribute night the Conor Byrne Pub is hosting. An Ancient Vessel Allstar cast has been pulled together with some of Seattle’s finest players featuring Randy Neal (Captain Leroy & the Zydeco Locals, The Hilltones) on guitar, Mark Bateman (Ian McFeron Band) on drums, Norman Baker as bassist James Jamerson, Ryan FitzSimmons (Man Rockwell, Jonathan Kimball Band) on guitar, and a fine young vocalist named Raquelle Manginsay that is sure to be getting down more on the Seattle music scene soon. Other groups featured this night are The Head & the Heart, the Foghorns, and many others.

This nights music is exclusively Motown Records of the 1960’s era. Ancient Vessel has recognized this to be one of the best labels and eras of music in human history. In the spirit of the Funk Brothers – the Ancient Vessel Allstars are please to take on this task to emulate the sound and feel of this hugely prolific session band. Their set is slotted to start at 11:15 and will grace your ears with the sounds of the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, and Smokey Robinson.

ATTENTION: (though they will be playing all covers) THESE ARE NOT COVER BANDS!!!!!!!!!

Bossanova released 20 years ago today

Author matt   Filed under Listen Now!, music news   August 13, 2010

Thanks to John Richards at KEXP we’re reminded Bossanova was released 20 years ago today.

http://www.google.com/search?aq=f&sourc … =bossanova <- you can listen to tracks directly from that Google link, free, from that page. KEXP is playing many songs from Bossanova today.

I bought it 20 years ago today, plus about a week. I had just discovered Doolittle, and was absolutely blinded by this new band.

I saw them on Bossanova tour that December 10th at the Gothic Theater in Denver.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bossanova <- you can listen to “Velouria” on that page, directly. It features a now-rarely used theramin, known for making “ghost” noises in movies and TV shows.

After the Pixies finishing touring obligations for their second album Doolittle (1989) in 1990, band members Black Francis, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering moved from Boston to Los Angeles. Bassist Kim Deal did not initially move with the rest of her band mates due to the amount of tension that existed within the band at the time. Deal ultimately decided to travel out to Los Angeles with the rest of the group.[1] Lovering stated that he, Santiago, and Black Francis moved to Los Angeles because that’s where they intended to record. The three band members lived in the Oakwood apartments, along with comic Garett Morris and members of the band White Lion. Producer Gil Norton also moved into the apartment complex.[2]

Rolling Stone gave Bossanova three out of five stars

Album Review: The Gentry – ‘Sex by the Unit’

Author et2kah   Filed under Album Review, Music, Northwest Labels, Upcoming, Upcoming Shows   August 2, 2010

The Gentry

Sex by the Unit, by Portland’s The Gentry, danceable fusion-electro rockers, opens with a 10 note tease of down tempo electro-beats, warns you with a tempered siren, launches into a hard hitting blend of meta-influenced electro rock that grabs your attention and body. The opening title song is fueled by the signature driving guitar, beautifully integrated electro-keyboard work, lugubrious bass and driving rhythm punctuated glorious, hi-hat speed work, the lyrics insightfully snarl and bite at pop culture on a rich, soaring and seductive vocal. It only gets better from here.

The Gentry – Sex by the Unit – Official Video

Awkwardness! Opens with big driving drums, a distorted loose bass line, synth bass followed by guitar then powerful vocal that channels both earlier electro-rock influences as well as power groups like Zeppelin. This is as straightforward rock and roll as any one makes, electro punk to the highest degree, and my favorite new road tune.
