Portland-based Britt Daniel and the rest of the indie rockers in Spoon are bringing their act to the Crystal Ballroom tonight, marking the band’s first Portland gig since mid-2007.  Daniel, lead vocalist for the indie quartet, last played in Portland during last year’s Music Fest Northwest (MFNW).

The show is sold-out, so if you haven’t bought tickets yet now might be a good time to start scouring craigslist.  These guys rarely disappoint.

The Heart is a Drum Machine

Author matt   Filed under music news   March 5, 2009

“The Heart is a Drum Machine,” the eagerly awaited documentary that explores the complex and critical relationship between humanity and music, will make its Seattle premiere at the Northwest Film Forum on Apr. 22 at 8:00 pm.

The film, directed by Christopher Pomerenke and produced by Ryan Page and Hans Fjellestad of The Twinkle Cash Company and responsible for 2006’s “Moog” documentary, explores music’s role in shaping human history, the profound connection people have had to music throughout human history, how it has shaped our experiences and its involvement in our daily lives. Tackling the topic is a who’s who of musicians including George Clinton, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, X’s John Doe, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante and Sleater-Kinney’s Janet Weiss, music historians and writers such as MTV’s Kurt Loder and KCRW’s Nic Harcourt as well as scientists including Carl Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan (discussing the “Golden Record”).

The Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd created an original score for the film as well as covering Elton John’s “Rocket Man” with vocals from the aforementioned Keenan.

Tickets for the screening are currently on sale for $6 to $9 at the Northwest Film Forum box office or online at www.brownpapertickets.com. The Northwest Film Forum is located at 1515 12th Ave.
