Disregard the name: Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head a Glistening Pleasure to listen to

Author C Mahoney   Filed under Music   June 27, 2008

July 15, 2008. Put it in the calendar. Or on the back of your hand (just don’t let it fade in the shower). Go out and buy the cd. And dance. And laugh. Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head releases their debut album Glistening Pleasure, and it is GOOD! From the first track “Me + Yr Daughter” to the short “Sophisticated Side Ponytail” they make you dance. And dance. Personal favorite track: “Beard Lust”

There will be a cd-release show at Easy Street Records on the 15th of July, so go out and support them. Or you can catch them at the Capitol Hill Block Party on 7/25 an the Vera Stage.

JOSHUA JAMES/CORY CHISEL @ THE TRIPLE DOOR

Author matt   Filed under Upcoming   June 24, 2008

Joshua James, originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, has been called a singer-skater-songwriter. Now based in Salt Lake City, he’s been gaining notice all over with a whispering voice that seems to get inside your mind and songs that take on big themes and extremes. Cory Chisel is a songwriter on the verge. He broke out of Appleton, Wisconsin, with a passionate, storytelling blues sound and original songs that bring Van Morrison to mind, and he’s toured with the Roots. At the end of last year Chisel and his band, the Wandering Sons, were signed to the RCA label.

THE ROLLER @ the Blast-o-mat

Author matt   Filed under Upcoming

Their self titled debut album which was released on June 17th through Monofonus Press.

Having received much pre release hype and renowned for their intense live
shows, THE ROLLER draws from the deep vibrations of vintage doom and heavy
stoner rock such as Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer and balances classical
doom and hazy droning.

DAS LLAMAS release Class Wars: K-12
THIS FRIDAY at the Comet!!
w/ In the Empty City, The Mission Orange and Keith Ledger

Das Llamas has moved heads and feet alike at numerous shows up and down the west coast, toured across the midwest to the east coast and back. The Seattle four piece, whose influences range from dance to goth to punk to dub, have created a platypus of sound that is a new noise in a new era.

Kerry Zettel’s wild-throated melodies loom over a landscape of guitars and synthesizers ardently sewn together by Shawn Kock and Aaron Everett. Thomas Burke’s spastic percussion erupts against conspiring steadfast bass lines that create a grimy upbeat electro rock that drunkenly flirts with no-wave punk. Well studied in the use of multitasking, they do all the work of a five piece with a dynamic demeanor of six.

Obits Coming to the Northwest

Author Scissorhands   Filed under Music   June 23, 2008

Obits, The Lights Android Hero @ the Funhouse 7/11Obits, from Brooklyn, have announced a handful of shows happening this summer with Seattle and Portland as the only West coast stops (all of the other shows are taking place in the northeast).  The band features Rick Froberg playing the role of guitarist-vocalist as he did in bands such as Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, and Pitchfork.  According to various blogs, Obits played their first show earlier this year, but have been writing and practicing for a couple of years.  When I heard the two live songs on the band’s myspace page, I felt Obits picks up right where Hot Snakes left off.  Some reviews of their first show mention a more classic rock/blues sound.  There is no official word on when an album might be released.  Tour dates…

June 28th (early show) – New York, NY

June 28th (late show) – Hoboken, NJ

July 10th – Portland, OR – Doug Fir Lounge

July 11th – Seattle, WA – The Funhouse

Aug. 22nd – Cambridge, MA

Aug. 23rd – Providence, RI

Aug. 24th – New Haven, CT

Advanced tickets for the Funhouse show are available through Brown Paper TicketsThe Lightsand Android Hero round out the bill.

New Wolf Parade CD Released Today

Author matt   Filed under Northwest Labels   June 17, 2008

atmountzoomer.jpgMy most-anticipated day in quite a while has arrived. Wolf Parade released At Mount Zoomer today. The Sub Pop band’s release is its second, the first being 2005’s outstanding, mindbending Apologies to the Queen Mary.

I have the record on order, and I’ll post a review here when I’ve soaked in it for a few days.

Nam releases his debut CD, and it’s fun

Author C Mahoney   Filed under Album Review   June 13, 2008

Nam released his new album last Saturday at the Vera Project with Good Medicine (Macklemore, Geologic of Blue Scholars, Khingz, and Gabe Teodros). While I missed the show, I picked up the CD Monday at Sonic Boom. It’s simple. It’s fun. There are definite echoes of the Blue Scholars and Common Market, with tracks like “Where You At Now.” He doesn’t stick to the conscious rap genre though, with lighter tracks like “Feelin’ Fresh” featuring Khingz. “Get Live” is a personal favorite. But it’s all good.

Omnia Mutantor replaces LESBIAN in Noise for Needy Line up!

Author stradhoughton   Filed under Music   June 11, 2008

This Friday LESBIAN had to back out of their benefit show at the Funhouse because their dumb-ass drummer busted up his foot and can’t kick his kickers.  Instead, LESBIAN’s rhythm guitarist Dan LaRochelle is unleashing his new project on us.  Peep this shit:  OMNIA MUTANTOR  which means: “All things change.”  The set will conceptually be sort of a fugue comprised of three themes:        Abgrund         Irrgaten        and Nacht    ….each of the performers will represent one of the three themes:  Dan LaRochelle (from LESBIAN) guitar.(Nacht-night)   Nihilist (from In Memorium) on vokills.(Abgrund-Abyss)  Andrew McInnis (from Lemons & Stallions) on drums.(Irrgaten-Labyrinth)……wow!!
