NWMB Recommends - Seattle Concerts and Shows for April, 2008

Author Kevin LeDoux   Filed under Music   April 4, 2008

OK, I know I’m waaay behind getting the rock out to you kiddies this month, but I have been so sidetracked with the upcoming Black Keys show at Showbox on the 5th that I just coudn’t come up with any other shows. Regardless, with a little help from LB, I’ve got a great list of shows for April. Highlights are… well the Black Keys of course, but also look for Scott H Biram coming to El Corozon on Sat the 19th, RJD2 on the 12th playing at Chop Suey and my recommended show of the month (besides Black Keys) is Thurs the 1oth at Neumos. Shackletons, The Hands, New Faces and Born Anchors all playing together for $8. YEAH!
Have I mentioned the Black Keys yet? Well they’re playing Saturday night the 5th.
The rest of the recommendations are after the break, full with band llinks so you can listen before you go! Please let us know if there are any others you recommend.

Sat Apr 5

Black Keys
$20 8:00 @ Neumos
There is nothing else happening on earth worth talking about tonight. I cannot wait for the 747 to come and land on my face, and melt it off. Bring it on Dan and Pat!

Thurs Apr 10

The Shackletons
THE HANDS

NEW FACES - (My’s take)
BORN ANCHORS
$8 ADV, 8PM DOORS, 21+ @ Neumos
This is easily the show of the month. Loveless-Records-via-Chambersburg, PA’s Shackeltons bludgeon Neumos during a US tour. Suported by the Hands, one of my lon time Seattle faves, New Faces, winner of the Sound OFF under 21 competition at EMP this year and Born Anchors, another gem of the Pac NW. Too good to miss.

Sat Apr 12
The Old Haunts (feat. Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill)
Feral Children
Coconut Coolouts
Triclops!
7:30 PM, $8 ($7 w/ club card), All Ages @ Vera Project

From LB -Man, if there was ever a time to check out an all ages show at the Vera Project, this would be it. Nestled in Queen Anne, the non-profit organization puts on lots of great shows every month.

The one on April 12th, however, is an excellent show. If you’re not familiar with Olympia’s Old Haunts, how about a little star power to whet yer whistle? Tobi Vail, the former drummer of Bikini Kill, now smacks toms with this swamp-rock outfit. You’ve heard us fawn repeatedly over Feral Children, and Coconut Coolouts know how to throw a pizza party, that’s for sure. Be there or most definitely be square.

Sat, Apr 12
RJD2
Dalek
Happy Chicheste
$15 adv 9 :00 doors // All Ages @ Chop Suey
Whoa! RJD2 is in SEATTLE! All ages in CS is a close show, but frig. This is gunna be incredible.

Fri Apr 18
Pleasureboaters
w/ The Pharmacy
Tacocat
Strong Killings
9:00 @ King Cobra
From LB - One of the most underappreciated hard-core bands in Seattle, Pleasureboaters, plays the unsullied C-hill venue April 18th, following a US tour. Go see them rip your ears to shreds with shreiking vocals, monster bass lines, and delightful cacophony.

Fri Apr 18
BLITZEN TRAPPER
FLEET FOXES
THE QUIET ONES
$10 ADV-8PM DOORS -ALL AGES BALCONY-21+ Floor w/ ID
@ Neumos
Seattle gem, Fleet Foxes make thier homecoming at Neumos with Portland homies Blitzen Trapper. Should be a good fashioned rockscapade.

Sat, Apr 19
Scott Biram
Hillstomp
Bob Wayne & The Outlaw Carnies
$10 8:00P El Corazon

Scott IS the dirty ol one man band. His rock and roll is almost as gritty and dirty as he is. By dirty, I don’t mean he sings cheezy songs with dirty words. He’s got tin-can blues/rock that is just plain gutter filthy and good for the soul. This show ain’t gunna be pretty but a little raunch might make your night worthwhile. Here’s one of my faves - Been Down Too Long

Sat Apr 19
The Valley
Iceage Cobra
The DTs
Charge: $7 - Time: 9pm @ High Dive
Clearly a night to blow out your brains. Heavy Seattle rockers the VAlley light off the night at high Dive lead in by killer sets by Bellingham’s DT’s and Seattle’s Ice Age Cobra.

Mon, Apr 21
MGMT
w/ Special Guests
$10.77 8pm doors // All Ages @ Chop Suey
Current sensation MGMT are about to manage your butt into submission at CS. Again, all ages is tight, but worth it.

Sun, Apr 27

$12 Doors at 11 AM show at noon
El Corozone is hosting the Exposure Music Fest featuring 20 Alt Rock and Punk Bands
Unfortunately I don’t have a line-up and thier site www.concertsfirst.com is useless, but frig, a random day of punk can’t be bad.

Wed Apr 30

Lake of Falcons
Low Red Land

The Curious Mystery

$7 9pm-21+ @ high Dive

From LB - You’re gonna hear about every LoF show from us. Why? Because they fuckin’ rock, that’s why. Quit buggin’ us and go see for yourself. P.S. It’s my berfday!

As much as I love Lake of Falcons, on the 30th I will be at Chop Suey to see The Night Marchers, the newest band from John “Speedo” Reis (Drive Like Jehu, Rocket From the Crypt, Hot Snakes, the Sultans and the head honcho at Swami Records). The band also features Hot Snakes Gar Wood and Jason Kourkounis on bass and drums.

Kevin LeDoux Says:

Forgot one big show for my April list.
Mike Doughty, formerly of Soul Coughing but more recently reknown for his folky/rockin solo works.
Sunday, April 27
Moore Theatre
w/ Panderers
Tix to this show are a whoppin $45, but if you got the scratch, you won’t be disappointed. Just be sure to stay in the bottom 2 balconies. The top has crap-all for sound.

aaron Says:

You Think the Black Keys can melt some face? Check Out Lotus @ the Tractor on the 16th… oh yeah! I love the Keys but i had to throw out there my most anticipated show this month!

Kevin LeDoux Says:

Hey Aaron, nice recommendation.
I just spend an hour streaming songs from Lotus on Indie 911 http://www.indie911.com/directory/JamBands/lotus
I think this could be an great band to see live! - Much more electronica than I would have expected from a band heading to the Tractor…

aaron Says:

Kevin, agreed, the tractor is kind of a strange venue for them, but oddly enough, one of the best i could think of to see them at! Hopefully it will bring the hipsters in off the hill, and the the hicks in from the barns, the yupsters in from fremont, the cool jazz lovin cats hangin at the 3door, the freaks from everywhere that hunt the UNNNZZZZZZ… and it will end up one big ooozing pool of hipster/hippie/hillbilly/freak,smileyourfaceoff
Lotusblooming madness!

Yeah can you tell how excited i am for this show?!!

Another thing, thanks for the word about the Rjd2 show, i was down in portland a couple weeks ago and it was being hyped everywhere, i just figured he was playing in seattle also but that is the first I’ve heard of it, speaking of strange places to play Chop Suey? oh well it’s still gonna rock! I havent seen him with a live band yet, but i have seen him work 6 tables at once!! The Def Juxie days!!
Oh yeah, The Keys! so sad that i missed them this time through,(damn tickets sold in a matter of minutes!) but I am fortunate enough to be seeing them later this summer at Rothbury!!! and the word is they might get a latenight set! most of my friends have never seen them live, they like their albums, but just don’t get it!! Much love- back to work mode.
