Helms Alee at the Comet on 12/28 (tomorrow!)

helms-alee.jpgThis is a slow time of year for good shows, but tomorrow night at the Comet is a show that is not to be missed. Helms Alee is easily my favorite new band of 2007. They are loud, heavy and intense. They sound like sledgehammers in a thunderstorm, but still remain beautifully melodic.

Last Friday I drove down to Tacoma just to see them open for Seaweed. Because of an accident on I-5, it took me two hours to get there and I barely made it before they started, but it was completely worth it.

Ben Verellen, former frontman of Harkonen, supplies vocals and guitar. Drums are handled by Lozen frontwoman Hozoji Matheson-Margullis, AKA Annie. They are rounded out by Dana on bass. Dana also sings the song, “Paraphrase”, which may be my favorite of all their songs.

Friday’s show at the Comet is a benefit for the Vera Project and is headlined by Bloodhag. I can’t stress enough how amazing I think Helms Alee are. Get down there and see for yourself tomorrow night.
