Top 20 Singles of 2007

Author Kevin LeDoux   Filed under Uncategorized   December 14, 2007

OK, the best album thing of the year thing has been done… and to be perfectly honest, with all of the blog browsing and one-by-one song downloading I do these days, I don’t think I’ve really listened to too many entire albums. Essentially, if I were to list my “best albums of 2007″ that would just be a list of the 5 albums I’ve listened all the way through this year. Not much to base an opinion on, eh? Now singles on the other hand, I’ve heard a ka-zillion. I’ve done my best to narrow it down and have 20 of my faves for you. Some I heard in January and have hung on through the entire year. Others are new just this week.

So without further ado, I give you my Top 20 Singles of 2007. I’ve even hooked up links to the songs/videos if you’re not familiar. Enjoy.

20 – Flathead – The Fratellis – Costello Music
Not an album I would listen to over and over, but when I hear this song it just get’s fired up… and wanting to buy an iPod

19 – Bend Over Beethoven – !!! – Myth takes
One of the best shows I saw last year. This song inspired one of Seattle’s largest dance parties on record.

18 – Not Yet – The Veils – Nux Vomica
One of many songs in this list that start small and end in huge epic crescendo. I’ve definitely got something for taht kind of song structure

17 – Weird – Menomena – Friend and Foe

16 – Positively Inclined – Wax Tailor – Hope & Sorrow

15 – The Good Guy – North Twin – Falling Apart

14 – Boy With a Coin – Iron and Wine – The Shepherd’s Dog

13 – Lien On Your Dreams – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Baby 81
Another of the 5 albums I would rate as best of the year. I had a hard time picking just one from Baby 81. But this week, this one’s my favorite.

12 – restless – unkle – war stories
Excellent music for wreckless speeding

11 – 2080 – Yeasayer – All Hour Cymbols

Whew, pretty awesome so far, ain’t it?
And on to the Top 10 – Are you ready?

10 – 1000 Words – Arthur & Yu - Arthur & Yu

09 – Will You Return? – The Avett Brothers – Emotionalism

08 – The Plot – White Rabbits – Fort Nightly
I only heard this song for the first time 2 weeks ago. It’s been so lodged in my brain I had to slip it into the top 10.

07 – Certified Air Raid Material - edIT - Certified Air Raid Material
I don’t even listen to much electronica, but this could sway me.

06 – Dancing On Our Graves – The Cave Singers – Invitation Songs
Local Seattleband – the Cave Singers, made a name for themselves this year by performing for the Matador Halloween party. They’ve got potential to get huge.

05 – Hailin From The Edge – Apparat – Walls

04 – paper planes – M.I.A. – Kala
All I wanna do is “pow-pow-pow-pow!”

03 – A-Punk – Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend LP
This is one of those songs that has hung on the entire year.

02 – Two Times – The Blakes – The Blakes
If I were to pick a favorite album of the year, this would be it. Light in the Attic scored huge with the Blakes, they just finished an intense US tour and are playing New Years here in the NW. Let’s hope they catch on.

01 – Collarbone – Fujiya y Miyagi – Transparent things
OK, now you might be surprised that I chose this as my #1, but let me explain. If ever I was to have a theme song that would play whenever I walked into a room… THIS would be it. This song has that head-bobbin understated Joe-cool rhythm that will most probably never achieve. And if THIS is out there, think of how much MORE is out there. This is the kind of music that tells me to go out there and BE somebody.

So, there ya go.

Agreed – long live the album! It’s way more of an artistic push and accomplishment to make a listenable (or interesting) full-length work than just a few tracks. iPod generation – redefining the one-hit wonder.

I defend Ledoux’s right to assemble a list of singles, and even though I have only ever heard of a handful of these bands – White Rabbit? North Twin? insert digital shrug here – what I find useful about this list is just what singles are meant to do. They act as a springboard to get you into the band or genre. “If you like this song, you’ll like…”

I *will* throw a “What? Nothing from “In Rainbows”?” but only in vain as it’s Ledoux’s list.
