Got a Bomb Dropped on Me

Author matt   Filed under Music   December 4, 2006

I was in Grand Central Bakery near my place yesterday, and when I walked in a bomb dropped on me.

Gap Band IVThe staff was playing a funk CLASSIC, The Gap Band’s You Dropped a Bomb on Me. I almost had to sit down; I was lightheaded with nostalgia, and my feet were getting “happy”.

Back in ‘82 or so I used to hear this at the Skateland roller rink, and one time I went up to the DJ booth to ask what it was. They told me and I went out and bought the tape with allowance or lawn-mowing money.

That tape turned out to have some mighty sweet tracks for which I had no context for understanding them. I was a suburban, Caucasian 11-year old, but they sounded sweet. I never did follow that tape up with another of theirs, or really any funk other than a light appreciation of Boney M, but it made a pretty big impression on me back then.

The song has aged well, and rocks even better than I remember it rocking. It hit #1 on the Billboard R&B charts back in 1982.
